Photography
We taught the students the functionality of a DSLR camera and the different settings that could be applied. We also introduced students to historically powerful images in order to demonstrate the social and political significance of photography and how it is used to tell stories and convey message. Then the students were given cameras to take photographs that captured parts of their identities.

- Black Power Salute | John Dominis 1968 Tommie Smith (center) and John Carlos (right) give the black power salute at the 1968 Olympic Games. At the olympics they made a statement for the whole of black people so that the rest of the world knew that not all were equal in the US. This could be considered the first example of professional athletes taking the knee in solidarity with black Americans.

- The Kneel | Michael Zagaris 2016 . Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick shook the world when he chose to take a knee during the national anthem to protest systemic oppression against people of color and ongoing police brutality. Although Kaepernick lost his job and millions of dollars for his believes, he continues to speak out for people that don’t have a voice. This photograph successfully captures an act that sparked a lot of social and political conversations that needed to be had.

- Tank Man | Jeff Widner 1989 This was a day before the Tiananmen Square massacre, where Chinese troops attacked pro-democracy demonstrators camped on the plaza. As he captured multiple photographs of bloodied victims, scorched vehicles, and outright chaos a column of tanks rolled out on the plaza and were stopped by one guy carrying shopping bags. They tried to go around him but he stepped back into their path. They eventually forced him out of the way without killing him but not before his bravery was immortalized in the photograph
