Black Power Salute | John Dominis 1968 Tommie Smith (center) and John Carlos (right) give the black power salute at the 1968 Olympic Games. At the olympics they made a statement for the whole of black people so that the rest of the world knew that not all were equal in the US. This could be considered the first example of professional athletes taking the knee in solidarity with black Americans.
